Crime is soaring in Airports

With last minute vacations before school starts and business trips, there’s been crime soaring at airports. The New York Post states: “Larcenies are up nearly 30 percent from the first half of 2010 and the arrest rate is a pathetic 9 percent.” Included in the figures are thefts from baggage carousels, swiped property left unattended, and thefts by baggage handlers and other employees. The most frequently stolen items are laptops and iPads.

In order to prevent this from happening to your personal belongings there are some crime prevention tips to follow:

Carry your purse close to your body, or your wallet in an inside front pocket. Consider wearing a money pouch under your clothes.
Never leave your bags unattended or behind your back where you cannot see them.
Avoid displaying expensive items such as laptops, cameras, jewelry, and luggage that might draw attention. Your aim should be to blend in with the crowd, Not Stand Out.
Stay especially alert and watch your bags carefully at all times. Don’t let anyone but uniformed airline personnel handle or watch your bags.

THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.
3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste ... And taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.
4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.
5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.
6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.
7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.
8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.
9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)
10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television.

8 MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake.. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.
2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.
3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.
4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?
5. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.
7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

LET’S TALK ABOUT CRIME PREVENTION

Do you know what prevention means? It means making it harder for something harmful to happen.

Crime prevention means reducing the chances for criminals to victimize you, your family, and neighbors. It means protecting property and teaching kids and adults to be alert and aware. It means doing things that build communities up, and stopping things that tear communities down.

You need to go beyond watching out. You need to help out, too. When all is said and done, your safety, health, and satisfaction depend on the well-being of others. That’s why partnerships are such a key part of successful crime prevention. It takes everyone working together. Whether you’re 8 or 80, the best weapons against street crime are alertness and common sense. October is Crime Prevention Month. Let’s actively practice crime prevention and helping out to make ourselves, our children, and our communities safer, healthier places to live.

Heat Wave Safety Tips

Summer heat waves can be dangerous. Older people are at the highest risk. People normally cool their bodies by sweating, but under some conditions, sweating isn't enough. Very high body temperatures may damage the brain or other vital organs. Some conditions that can limit the ability to regulate temperature include old age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn, and drug and alcohol use. Summertime activity, whether on the playing field or the construction site, must be done in a way to aid the body's cooling mechanisms and prevent heat-related illness.

Protecting Against Heat Injuries

To protect your health when temperatures are extremely high:

Drink Plenty of Fluid - Increase your fluid intake regardless of your activity level. During heavy exercise in hot weather, drink 2-4 glasses (16-32 ounces) of cool fluids each hour. Consult with your doctor if you have been prescribed a fluid-restricted diet or diuretics. During hot weather, you will need to drink more liquid than your thirst indicates. This is especially true for those over 65 years of age. Avoid very cold beverages to prevent stomach cramps or drinks containing alcohol, which will actually cause you to lose more fluid.

Replace Salt and Minerals - Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body, which are necessary for your body and must be replaced. The best way to replace salt and minerals is to drink fruit juice or a sports beverage during exercise or any work in the heat. Do not take salt tablets unless directed by your doctor. If you are on a lowsalt diet, ask your doctor before changing what you eat or drink.

Wear Appropriate Clothing and Sunscreen - Wear as little clothing as possible when you are at home. Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. In the hot sun, a wide-brimmed hat will keep the head cool. Sunburn affects your body's ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids. It also causes pain and damages the skin. A variety of sunscreens are available to reduce the risk of sunburn. Check the sun protection factor (SPF) number on the label of the sunscreen container. Select SPF 15 or higher and follow package directions.

Slow down. Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.

Pace Yourself - If you are unaccustomed to working or exercising in hot weather, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. If exertion in the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath, stop all activity, get into a cool or shady area, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak, or feel faint.

Stay Cool Indoors - The most efficient way to beat the heat is to stay in an air conditioned area. If you do not have an air conditioner or evaporative cooling unit, consider a visit to a shopping mall or public library for a few hours. Do not rely on electric fans as your primary cooling device during a heat wave. When the temperature is in the high 90s or higher, a fan will not prevent heat-related illness. A cool shower or bath is a more effective way to cool off.

Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully - If you must be out in the heat, plan your activities so that you are outdoors either before noon or in the evening. While outdoors, rest frequently in a shady area.

Use a Buddy System - When working in the heat, monitor the condition of your coworkers and have someone do the same for you. If you are 65 years of age or older, have a friend or relative

call to check on you twice a day during a heat wave. If you know anyone in this age group, check on them at least twice a day.

Monitor Those at High Risk - Those at greatest risk of heat-related illness include:

infants and children up to four years of age;
people who overexert during work or exercise;
people 65 years of age or older;
people who are ill or on certain medications; and
people who are overweight.

If you or someone you know is at higher risk, it is important to drink plenty of fluids; avoid overexertion; and get your doctor or pharmacist's advice about medications taken for high blood pressure, depression, nervousness, mental illness, insomnia, or poor circulation.

Adjust to the Environment - Be aware that any sudden change in temperature, such as an early summer heat wave, will be stressful to your body. You will have a greater tolerance for the heat if you limit your physical activity until you become accustomed to the heat. If traveling to a hotter climate, allow several days to become acclimated before attempting any vigorous exercise, and work up to it gradually.

Use Common Sense - Avoid hot foods and heavy meals; they add heat to your body. Do not leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car. Bring your pets indoors with you to protect them. Dress infants and young children in cool, loose clothing and shade their heads and faces with hats or an umbrella. Limit sun exposure during the midday hours and in places of potential severe exposure, such as beaches. Ensure that infants and children drink adequate amounts of liquids. Give your outdoor animals plenty of fresh water, leave the water in a shady area, and consider wetting the animal down.

Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion

Two common problems are heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Heat stroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature. The body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Heat exhaustion is the body's response to an excessive loss of water and salt contained in sweat. Those most prone to heat exhaustion are elderly people and people working or exercising in a hot environment.

Warning signs of heat stroke vary but may include:

an extremely high body temperature (above 103°F, orally);
unconsciousness;
dizziness, nausea, and confusion;
red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating);
rapid, strong pulse; and
• throbbing headache. Warning signs of heat exhaustion vary but may include:
heavy sweating;
muscle cramps;
weakness;
headache;
nausea or vomiting; and
paleness, tiredness, dizziness.

What to Do

If you see any of these signs, you may be dealing with a life-threatening emergency. Have someone call for immediate medical assistance while you begin cooling the victim:

Get the victim to a shady area.
Cool the victim rapidly using whatever methods you can. For example, immerse the victim in a tub of cool water; place in a cool shower; spray with cool water from a garden hose; sponge with cool water; or if the humidity is low, wrap the victim in a cool, wet sheet and fan him or her vigorously.
Monitor body temperature, and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101102°F.
If emergency medical personnel are delayed, call the hospital emergency room for further instructions.
Do not give the victim alcohol to drink.
Get medical assistance as soon as possible.

Sometimes a victim's muscles will begin to twitch uncontrollably as a result of heat stroke. If this happens, keep the victim from injuring himself, but do not place any object in the mouth and do not give fluids. If there is vomiting, make sure the airway remains open by turning the victim on his or her side.

These self-help measures are not a substitute for medical care but may help you recognize and respond promptly to warning signs of trouble. Your best defense against heat-related illness is prevention. Staying cool and making simple changes in your fluid intake, activities, and clothing during hot weather can help you remain safe and healthy.

Hi, Neighbors!

This is the inaugural issue of a newsletter I will be sending out to our block members periodically, or as I get information. It’s taken me a bit to gather enough news to make it readable. I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to pass it along to anyone who might get a benefit out of it. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PARTY I am thinking about having a neighborhood meeting on May 5th, 7:00pm about our “NCW Block Party” that I’m planning on May21st, 2011 at the open lot on the corner of Holy Oak Dr. & Live Oak Dr. to get the details of the block party. At a recent meeting for the NCW Block Captains we had discussed a few options we can do but I would LOVE to have y’alls input. This year I could really use some help so we can out do the last Block Party!

I will be bringing a container for donations of a can of food for the Food Pantry, which we do at every NCW event including meetings. FYI –the food pantry’s demand has gone up 65% in the last year.

LEWISVILLE PD GIVING FREE SAFETY ASSESSMENTS The officers that came to our meeting in November can come give you a FREE SAFETY ASSESSMENT of your home. The officers will go around your home and assess your safety level and recommend ways to improve the safety of your property. They will provide a form detailing what they found, corrective actions to take and I am told this form can be used to get a 15% reduction in homeowners insurance for 2 years. Contact your homeowner’s insurance company for more details on the insurance

CRIMEREPORTS.COM The City of Lewisville Police Department has joined forces with Crimereports.com. The purpose is to share information on crimes in our city with other cities and to share information with the communities about crime.

ANIMAL SERVICES ALERT It’s spring and there are signs of wildlife everywhere. The city’s Animal Services department is reporting an upswing in coyotes and bobcats in the area as well as copperheads and water moccasin snakes. In the case of the furry animals, rabies is a concern. Denton County had the most cases of rabies in the entire state of Texas last year. The disease is fatal in both animals and humans. In the last 18 months, the Lewisville animal services department has had positive rabies cases in two skunks and a bat. Since we live near a wooded greenbelt, it may not be unusual to see these animals. The City offers these recommendations for coyotes (and bobcats):

Do's                  Do keep small dogs and cats inside at night.

                            Do keep the covers secured on your trash receptacles.

                             Do keep your dog and cat on a leash (as required by City ordinance).

                              Do contact Animal Services if you spot a coyote in your neighborhood.

Don’ts              Do not feed your pets on the back porch.

                          Do not walk your small dog in wooded areas.

                           Do not approach, chase, or otherwise taunt a wandering coyote.

                             Do not approach a coyote if it appears trapped, injured, or sick. Contact Animal Services immediately at 972-219-3478.

                               Do not ever try to touch a coyote.

These animals are urbanized, and as such they are very difficult to catch. If caught, the animal will be euthanized.

In the case of copperheads and water moccasins, these snakes are venomous and will strike if they are stepped on or near. As the weather is warming up and since we live near a creek it is possible you may encounter one. The city will only remove a snake if it comes into your house or garage, so if you see one in your yard or in a park, it is recommended to give it a wide berth. If you are bitten by ANY of the animals mentioned it is urgent you get to a hospital for proper treatment.

POLICE STATION OPEN HOUSE The Lewisville Police Department has just finished remodeling their police station. Captain Deaver, Lewisville Police Captain has said that the LPD will have an Open House, offering hot dogs and free tours of the new remodeled police station. This may be the only chance you get to see the inside of the station as they have also increased security in the building and do not offer general tours to the public. Word I’m getting is that the date will be the first week of May, possibly May 3rd from 5-7pm. I will have firm confirmation on that date and time this week, hopefully and will pass this information along when I get it.

ATM Skimmers in use here

The Lewisville Police Department is investigating approximately 30 incidents where victim’s credit cards were used fraudulently. In each case, the victim’s PIN number and credit card information was compromised. Detectives believe the credit card information and PIN numbers were obtained when victim’s used the cards at ATM’s or gas stations where they would have had to enter a PIN number.
Criminals are able to obtain the information needed with the use of “skimmers”. “Skimmers” are placed on devices where credit cards are accepted into a machine. The “skimmers” reads the magnetic strip on the credit card to obtain the customer information. There are also usually cameras attached to see the PIN that customers enter. The “skimmers” do not affect the transaction so it usually goes on undetected.

The criminals then retrieve the “skimmers” and use the information to clone the credit card. The criminals can then use the cloned card with the PIN to access the victim’s account and take cash from the bank account.
“Skimmers” are extremely difficult to detect. Attached are a few examples of what “skimmers” look like. Customers should avoid using ATM’s in isolated areas. Those areas are targeted because criminals can place the “skimmers” on the machines without being detected. Customers should also cover their PIN entry with their opposite hand. This prevents concealed cameras from picking up the PIN that was entered.

If a “skimmer” is detected on a machine, immediately contact the law enforcement agency where the machine is located.

Working together in this economy

With today’s economy, more crime prevention officers are being tasked to do other police work or being laid off. As a result, crimes in certain areas are increasing and law enforcement officers find they have to do more while being short-staffed. Local law enforcement officers are having to focus on crimes like gang violence and murder – leaving less time to investigate crimes like robberies, theft, and , threats.

With this in mind, it is our duty as neighbors and civilians to step up and help keep our communities and each other safe from crime. Here are some tips to help local law enforcement in your areas:

Start or join a neighborhood watch group

Volunteer to help at your local police department or contact Shelly at shellyszenasy@gmail.com.

Help identify community problems, exchange information, and coordinate interaction between the public and the police to make the city a safer place to live

Remember there is no substitute for good locks on doors and windows, well-lighted streets, and teaching your children how to be safe.

WHAT’S YOUR RESOLUTION?

We all know the drill. 2010 is coming to a close and right about now is the time for those beloved, yet often-forgotten New Year’s resolutions. Lose those last five (or fifty) pounds, quit smoking, work less, play harder; whatever your vice is, now is the time to choose to get rid of it and move forward! The season is alive and well with goal-driven energy and it is only right that we make the best of it.

Though most resolutions are motivated by personal reward, why not try something new this year and consider not only how you can help yourself but also how you can support your local community and address an issue that is a concern for everyone. Ask yourself in 2011, what can I do to prevent crime in my community? What can I do to help the youth I pass everyday stay out of trouble? Even the smallest acts of service are effective in crime prevention. To help get you started, try some of these ideas:

Become more active in the community by participating in or starting a Neighborhood Watch program

Ensure your children know how to handle bullying situations. You can watch NCPC’s “Samantha’s Choice” video for a simple conversation-starter

Volunteer at a community center to conduct activities for youth

Whatever activity you choose, make sure to engage your own interests so that it is fun for you. As many of us know, it’s easier to stick to those resolutions that we find enjoyable. The important thing to remember is that the new year is a new opportunity to do something bigger and better than we did before and what better way to start the year off right than to do our part to prevent crime and be the change we want to see in society

Rain, rain and more rain

Lewisville is being hit pretty quick with all of the rain. Some Lewisville residents (in Oak Creek Mobil home park)are having to be evacuated from their homes. So fare none in our Neighborhood. Yet we should all keep an eye out for raising water. Central park is pretty much under water.
If you need to evacuate your home due to this rain, PLEASE contact your Neighbors so they can do the same.
Everyone stay safe. If you don't have to get out in the storm, stay at home.

Last night someone tried to break into a garage door on Mockingbird Dr. Police report was taken and an increased Police patrol will be going on for a while for our Neighborhood. The violators didn't get into the garage or the home, yet did break the door enough to cause several hundred dollars in damages. When thinking of crime prevention (or specifically how to keep your things safely yours) always remember the three elements that must be present in order for a crime to happen: desire, ability, and opportunity. If just one of those three elements is removed, the crime simply cannot occur. In regards to the gym situation, the easiest element to remove from the equation is opportunity. If you lock up your things in your locker instead of just throwing them in there and shutting the door, hoping they will still be there when you get back, you completely remove the opportunity for the crime to happen. Removing the opportunity for a crime is one of the easiest things you can do. Why just leave it to chance? Remove the opportunity—lock them up.

This applies to anywhere you may leave your things unattended (car, amusement park, office, etc). It may seem like common sense, but sometimes even the most cautious of us forget. Walking through my gym locker room, I noticed only a handful of lockers actually had locks on them. RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency numberimmediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

you. Neighborhood Watch serves as a springboard for efforts that address concerns such as recreation for youth, child care, and traffic safety.

You can learn new skills and get experience using them. You’ll learn crime
prevention skills, including the ability to be the eyes and ears for law enforcement.
Your whole family can get involved. There’s a role for everyone in Neighborhood
Watch. Young children can pick up litter and take part in safety programs designed
just for them. Youth can teach younger children how to stay safe. Retirees can operate telephone trees, write newsletters, and keep an eye out for daytime problems.

I have had a report of someone going through garbage cans, possibly for identity theft clues on Holly Oak Drive. Remember to always shred all personal information from bills, junk mail, magazines, and advertisements. Keeping a shreader in an easily accessable place helps you to remember to use it regularly.
If your garbage is at the curb it IS up for grabs, but if your garbage is close to the home that can be considered stealing. Besides, its not good to put your garbage out too soon, or animals can get into it.

Disturbance Leads to Standoff

On Sunday night, a female contacted police, asking for a civil stand-by. Her husband had been arrested last week after assaulting her. At that time, an Emergency Protective Order had been signed, prohibiting the husband from returning to their residence; however, the female thought that her husband had returned and was at the house waiting for her. Officers responded to the residence in the 700 block of Holly Oak. They searched the house, but her husband was not inside.

A short time after police left the residence, several 9-1-1 calls came into Dispatch, advising that the husband had showed up at the house after we left and assaulted the wife again. She fled the location, leaving him inside. Officers arrived and found that the husband was inside of the house. He initially refused to come outside and armed himself with an axe.

The SWAT Team and Department Negotiators were called to the scene. Negotiators made contact with the male and, a short time later, he agreed to surrender. The male was charged with Violation of a Protective Order and Aggravated Assault (on a Family Member).

Another example was in canned mushrooms. No-Name brand came from Indonesia. Next to them were President Choice brand. Produce of Canada !! The P.C. went into my grocery bag.

Are we Americans and Canadians as dumb as we appear --- or --- is it that we just do not think?

While the Chinese, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in North American markets, the media wrings its hands and criticizes the Obama Administration (and the Harper Government!) for perceived errors.

Yet 70% of North Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended.

Well, duh..why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges?

SIMPLY DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA/CANADA !!

Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose another product, or none at all.

You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.
Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some North American farmer. Easter is just an example, the point is do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own.

THINK ABOUT THIS, If 200 million North Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor...fast!!

The downside? Some Canadian/American businesses will feel a temporary pinch from having foreign stockpiles of inventory.

The solution? Let's give them fair warning and send our own message. Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on June 4, and continue it until July 4. That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their North American exports. Then they will at least have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.

Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are intelligent Americans and Canadians, and NOBODY can take us for granted.

Block Party turned out well!!!

Tree waste from the recent storm can be placed out for bulky waste collection at the regular trash collection location. Limbs must be less than 4 inches in diameter and cut to less than 4 feet in length. The waste must be tied in bundles of less than 50 pounds. Residents may put out an amount equal to what would fit in the back of a standard pickup truck at one time. Residents may also use their free landfill privileges (limited to two per month) to take the tree waste to DFW Landfill at 1601 Railroad Street. The waste must be covered to avoid charges.

A physics teacher in high school once told his students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't slow a train very much, a billion of them would. With that thought in mind, read the following, obviously written by a good American.

Check this out. I can verify this because I was in Lowes the other day for some reason and just for the heck of it I was looking at the hose attachments. They were all made in China . The next day I was in Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in USA . Start looking.

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job. So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track. Let's get behind her!

My grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more. My favorite toothpaste, Colgate, is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Kroger the super market. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA by a company in Cleveland , Ohio .

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets ... yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada . The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and
see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies! (We should have awakened a decade ago.)

Lewisville police looking for robbery suspect

Lewisville police are looking for a suspect in two aggravated robberies earlier today.

The first took place around 6 a.m. in the 2000 block of South Old Orchard Lane when a female jogger was attacked by a man with a knife. He stole her cellphone but the victim fought back and her screams caused him to flee.

The second incident took place about an hour later in a parking lot at 202 East Oak Knoll Circle. A woman was arriving home when she was attacked by a man with a knife who stole her wallet. This victim also fought back and was able to take the suspect's knife away from him, causing him to flee.

In both offenses, the suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his late teens, driving a dark (possibly gray) vehicle (possibly a Toyota). The last three numbers of the license plate are 675.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.
9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television.
8 MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake.. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.

4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

5. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.

7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

8. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in

I attached a quick picture of the little dog that came to our house last night. It's a female, dachsund mix. She was not wearing a collar or tag.

If we don't have luck, we may take her to Petsmart to see if she might be microchipped. We are trying to avoid taking her to a shelter.

City offers Halloween safety tips

With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighborhoods across the country, the American Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday. Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices can keep events safer and more fun.

Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
Cross the street only at corners.
Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars.
Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
Carry a flashlight to light your way.
Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)
Visit homes that have the porch light on.
Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
Be cautious of animals and strangers.
Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating. And don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

This morning I had a call from a Block Captain's Husband tell me that we have a suspicious looking person standing on the corner of Red Wing Dr. and Live Oak Dr.. He got the description and called the Lewisville Police Station, gave that description and guess what happened... Those people did not get a chance to break into one of our own neighbors home!!!

I want to Thank that person and you know who you are, very much for keeping an eye out for our Neighborhood. The whole thing took less than 5 minutes from start to finish.

OPERATIONS – PATROL
Driver Arrested for DWI after Short PursuitOn the night of Wednesday, October 7th, Officer Persinger spotted a car with a flat tire and front-end damage traveling southbound in the 2700 block of East State Highway 121 Business. Persinger attempted to stop the car using emergency lights and siren. The driver refused to stop for him, continuing southbound at speeds varying from 5 to 30 miles per hour. Officers Bryson and Johnson joined in the pursuit. At one point, back-up units blocked northbound State Highway 121 Business as the car crossed the median, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. Shortly after crossing the median, the car left the roadway and became stuck in the ditch. The driver, a 55 year-old Plano woman, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.Burglary of a BuildingOn Friday, October 10th, Officer Steinle investigated the burglary of a building in the 800 block of Treatment Plant Road. His investigation led to the recovery of a stolen dog. Officer Steinle developed leads on the location of the stolen dog on Friday and ultimately located the suspect at his home in the 100 block of Walters Street. The suspect fled from Officer Steinle, but was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. The dog was located and returned to its owner. The Criminal Investigations Division continues to follow-up on the case.
OPERATIONS – CID
National Night Out The Police Department participated in the National Night Out festivities on October 6th. The Neighborhood Resource Officers attended seven events throughout the evening. Officers passed out numerous pieces of crime prevention literature and answered questions from residents. The seven events were located at the following locations:

The Vista Ridge Estates Area
Austin Kent Ellis Pa
700 block of Juniper Lane
Heritage Hill Area
Pebble Ridge Area
Timberbrook Area Many citizens attended the events and had excellent questions for officers. Citizens received many tips to help reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime. Officers gave the attendees information on “Lock, Take, and Hide,” which is a campaign to educate citizens to “Lock” their vehicles, “Take” their keys, and “Hide” belongings when parking their vehicles. Officers also spoke about crime prevention surveys offered by our Neighborhood Resource Officers. The surveys have been very effective in providing citizens with pointers on security measures they can take to protect their home. Many citizens also shared tips with each other on techniques they have implemented to increase their security. One Crime Watch area had become somewhat stagnant over the years and, after attending their local event, vowed to rejuvenate their Crime Watch program again.

Vehicle Burglars Pick Wrong Car On Thursday, October 8th, Officer Martin Popick of the Street Crimes Unit was conducting surveillance in an unmarked car in the 2000 block of Stover. Officer Popick observed two suspicious people and began to monitor their activities. Officer Popick leaned back in his vehicle to keep them seeing him. Not realizing Popick was inside, one of the subjects approached his vehicle and opened the passenger door. Officer Popick detained both suspects to investigate their actions. Officer Jesse Hunter arrived to assist. Both individuals were questioned separately and they had different explanations for what they were doing. Officers noted that these two suspects fit the descriptions of two individuals that had been seen acting suspicious on Misty Lane earlier that same day. During the interview with officers, the suspects finally admitted that they had been checking car doors to see if they were unlocked and, if so, stealing money from inside. Officers located one victim whose vehicle had been burglarized. Officers arrested and charged both subjects with Burglary of a Vehicle. Detectives Assist Coppell Police with Crime Scene SearchOn October 8th, based on information developed in the Kathleen Garza homicide investigation, the Denton County District Attorney's Office and the Coppell Police Department identified a search area in Lewisville. At approximately 3:30 p.m., officers from the Coppell Police Department and the Lewisville Police Department responded to search a wooded area along State Highway 121, near Fish Hatchery Road. The search revealed items of clothing, bones, and hair. These items were turned over to Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office to be processed and analyzed. Narcotics Search WarrantOn Friday, October 9th, Officers Tiberghien, Ortiz, Alexander, and Sergeant Kemp discovered a marihuana grow inside of a house in the 1400 block of Wild Valley. Officers had been dispatched to the residence on a burglary in progress call after a witness reported having seen at least two people jump the fence to the residence. Upon his arrival, Officer Ortiz observed an unknown person exit the front door and then flee back inside after seeing his patrol car. This unknown person escaped out the rear of the residence.Officers entered the residence to check for additional suspects and observed numerous marihuana plants and marihuana inside the residence. They contacted officers from the narcotics unit who obtained a search warrant for the residence. Detective Eddie Barrett and Lieutenant Chris Butterworth from Special Operations responded to the scene. Detectives ultimately discovered 15 marihuana plants and a large quantity of marihuana at the location. Arrests are pending as the Narcotics Unit follows up on the investigation.

The Lewisville Police Department is investigating two incidents of theft involving Jorge Morales Roofing and Fence. The first known incident occurred on August 8th when a resident on Elmwood Drive was approached by Jorge Morales about repairing a damaged roof. The resident agreed to have the roof replaced and paid the suspect $2,000. The suspect partially removed the roof and left for the day. Neither the suspect nor his crew returned to finish the work.

The second known incident occurred on September 28th when a resident on Marblehead Drive was approached about needing a new roof. The resident stated that she gave Morales a total of $1,300 dollars to complete the job. She said Morales disappeared without doing any of the work promised.

Jorge Morales has been charged with theft in connection with both incidents.

The Lewisville Police Department is investigating an incident at Central Park where a 3-year-old child was assaulted. On October 3rd, two children went in the woman’s restroom at Central Park and were confronted by a white male. The male grabbed the 3-year-old by the arm and touched her hair. The 12-year-old child grabbed the younger child and fled the restroom. They reported the incident to family members. The male left the area before he could be located. The male is described as being older with gray hair, approximately 5’8” and weighing 170 pounds. He left the park in a gray early 90’s model Cadillac with a black top. A younger Hispanic male was in the vehicle also. He is described as being 5’6” and weighing approximately 160 pounds.

Theft of Vehicle Rims

At 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, two Dallas men, 32 and 36 years-old, were arrested for theft in the 600 block of Idlewilde Drive. The men were in the process of stealing rims from a Chevrolet Tahoe when a neighbor saw them and notified police. Officer Martinez located the two men. Each man was charged with two counts of theft, which were enhanced to felony offenses due to prior convictions.

Theft of Lawn Mower

On Friday, September 11, at 1:15 a.m., two Home Depot employees saw two men in a pickup truck pulling a cargo trailer pull up to a $3,500 lawn mower. The men cut the chain securing the lawn mower and began loading it in to the trailer. The employees intervened and chased off the thieves. The employees then contacted the Lewisville Police Department. Officer Johnson located the truck and trailer headed southbound on the interstate. He was able to stop the suspects and arrest them for theft. Detective Harvey, during his follow-up investigation, determined that the trailer was stolen the same night from Tractor Supply in Denton. The two suspects, 32 and 41 year-old men of Arlington, were arrested for theft. They face additional charges stemming from the Denton theft.

Fatality Accident

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, members of the Lewisville Police and Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle crash in the 2300 block of North I-35E south bound. A wrecker stopped to assist on an accident was struck from behind by a green Mitsubishi SUV. The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 23 year-old man, was killed in the accident. His passenger a 20 year-old woman suffered serious injuries and was transported by Lewisville ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The driver and passenger in the wrecker suffered minor injuries.

Suspect Charged in Identity Theft

In July 2009, a Lewisville resident reported that an unknown person was using her identifying information fraudulently. The victim realized the crime while completing paperwork for the State. Detective Billy Wilson was assigned the case for investigation. Detective Wilson verified that a person employed in the restaurant industry was using the victim’s social security number. Detective Wilson contacted the corporate office of the restaurant and was able to retrieve the employment records for their employee. The records indicated the employee listed the victim’s social security number as their own. The employee was working in a Jacksonville, Texas restaurant. Detective Wilson and Detective Henley interviewed the suspect in Jacksonville. The suspect admitted to using the social security number. The suspect stated he had purchased a counterfeit social security card at a Dallas bazaar in 1994. The suspect has been charged with Fraudulent Use of Identifying Information.

Stolen Motorcycle Recovered

In October 2008, the victim met a person on craigslist who stated he would repair the victim’s motorcycle. The victim gave the suspect the motorcycle to repair. The victim stated that after a period the suspect did not return any of his phone calls or emails about the status of the repairs. The victim said he located a listing on craigslist and it appeared the suspect had attempted to sell his motorcycle. Detective Scott Kelly was able to make contact with the suspect who stated that he still had the motorcycle. Detective Kelly recovered the motorcycle and returned it to the victim. Detective Kelly continues to investigate this case.

Suicidal Subject - 625 E. Vista Ridge Mall Drive

We all know how serious a threat of suicide is, but a threat by a police officer has drastic ramifications for the officer, his family, and our law enforcement community. In the early morning hours of September 11, a lot of us did a good job of resolving the threat so that no one was hurt. Dispatcher Rindy Schutz answered the 911 call from the wife of the suicidal Dallas Officer and over a 10 minute period, handled the call in a professional, calm, and empathetic manner. The questions she asked, the information she obtained, and the speed in which she updated the patrol officers contributed to the positive outcome. Great Job Rindy!

City issues rabies warning, urges caution by residents

Lewisville Animal Services today reported that a live bat picked up in a residential neighborhood on the north side of town has tested positive for rabies. Although there is no evidence at this time of infection among humans or domesticated animals, residents are being urged not to handle live or dead bats in order to avoid possible exposure to the disease.

The infected bat was collected on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of Jasmine Drive on Wednesday (Sept. 9) after being reported by a resident. However, because bats are highly mobile while feeding, residents throughout the area are being asked to avoid contact with bats.

Residents who believe they, their children or their outdoor pets might have come into physical contact with a live or dead bat recently is asked to contact Lewisville Animals Services at 972-219-3478 to report the contact. In addition, officials offered the following tips:

· Bats are wild animals and should never be handled.
· Some bats may be infected with rabies.
· Not all sick bats are rabid, and not all rabid bats appear sick.
· If you see a bat in a location where a person can reach it, or in a room where someone has been sleeping, please contact City of Lewisville Animal Services.

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy: PREVENT AND PREPARE!

Take everyday actions to stay healthy. You know what these are: getting enough sleep, eating well, avoiding stress, and drink plenty of fluids.
Cover your cough. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you do not have a tissue handy, sneeze or cough into the inside of your elbow. Your elbow rarely touches anything else.
Clean your hands often. Soap and water is preferred, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective and should be used when you can’t wash your hands. You can find this type of cleanser just about anywhere. It comes in different sizes that fit on your desk, car, purse, or pocket.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way – you can infect yourself.
Stay home when you are ill. Do not send your children to school when ill.
Follow public health advice. Your local public health department will be looking at ways to reduce opportunities for exposure and to prevent infection, such as encouraging vaccination.

What you should do if you think you have H1N1 Influenza:
Stay home if you get sick. Public Health recommends that you stay home from work, school, errands, and limit close contact with others to keep from infecting them. Stay home until there has been no fever (>100oPF) for 24 hours, without fever reducing medications. If you are a healthcare worker or if most of the people in your workplace are at high risk of complications from flu, then stay home for 7 days or until your symptoms are gone, whichever is longer.
In most cases H1N1 flu will resolve without medical attention.
Tips to get healthy:
get plenty of rest
take acetominophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen, or other fever reducing medicines as needed. DO NOT give aspirin or aspirin containing products to children and youth under 18 years old, to avoid Reyes Syndrome, a potentially life-threatening complication.
drink clear fluids (such as water, broth, sports drinks, electrolyte beverages for infants) to keep from being dehydrated
If medications are prescribed, be sure to follow instructions exactly. If you think you are having a reaction to the medication, report it to your health care provider immediately.

Labor Day - Most of us consider Labor Day to be the official "end of summer". School is back in session, most public pools are closing down, and the thermometer is beginning to get a break. But do you know the origin of Labor Day?

There is some disagreement over who actually organized the first "Labor Day" but all are in agreement over the purpose. It is a day to honor the contributions American workers have made to the strength and prosperity of our country. From humble beginnings in 1882, Labor Day celebrations grew until in 1894, Congress declared that the first Monday of September would be a national holiday.

Man Disguised as Maintenance Worker Steals Purses

On Monday, August 17th, at 12:55 p.m., Officers were dispatched to an Aggravated Robbery at the Macy’s Department Store, located at 2401 South I-35E. Officer Roman was the first to arrive on scene and he observed a black male matching the suspect’s description being followed by a Macy’s store manager. Officer Roman followed, but was unable to locate the suspect as he had fled back into the mall. While other officers searched for the suspect, a clerk at Macy’s told Officer Roman that the suspect wearing a tool belt had posed as a maintenance man. He had taken keys to the stock room where he was observed loading several expensive purses into his tool cart which was fitted with an empty box designed to conceal items. Once the stolen property was loaded into his cart, the suspect fled into the parking lot with the tool cart. The store manager followed and confronted the suspect who displayed a knife and threatened to cut him. The manager was able to recover the tool cart and the stolen merchandise, but the suspect fled on foot into the mall where the store manager lost sight of him. Officer Shelton soon found the suspect lying in the bed of a parked pickup truck. Officer Shelton confronted the suspect who attempted to flee on foot; however, Shelton apprehended the suspect who was taken into custody for evading arrest and aggravated robbery.

Dallas Man Drowns in Lake Lewisville

A 19 year-old Dallas man drowned in the lake Sunday evening around 6:30 p.m. He was swimming about 35 to 40 feet from the east shore, off of Catfish Drive, when he went into distress and submerged. When Sergeant Wagnon arrived on-scene, there were numerous persons already in the water looking for the subject. Through his interviews with witnesses, Sergeant Wagnon was able to assist the Lewisville Fire Department by directing them to the last known location of the man. The fire department divers quickly located the subject, pulled him from the water, and transported him to the Lewisville Medical Center. Despite the efforts of all involved, he was pronounced deceased at approximately 9:30 p.m.

OPERATIONS – CID
Burglary Arrest

On August 23rd, officers arrested a 28 year-old male for burglary of a building. At approximately 2:00 a.m., Officer Bender was dispatched to a burglar alarm at the Convenience Plus store, located at 1010 South Edmonds. Officer Jesse Hunter, from the street crimes unit, heard the alarm call dispatched and responded to the area. Officer Hunter was working in an unmarked vehicle. Officer Hunter observed the suspect as he exited the store. The suspect began to walk away carrying items from the store. Officer Hunter ordered the suspect to the ground and took him into custody. The suspect has stolen lottery tickets and beer from the store. Officers Matthew Bender, Richard Eledge, Martin Popick, Anderson Rock, and Sergeant Michael Moore arrived and searched the business. No additional suspects were located. The 28 year-old was arrested for burglary of a building.

This same suspect also had an outstanding arrest warrant for a burglary of a habitation. On July 15th, a resident came home to discover that his apartment at 1002 South Edmonds had been burglarized. A witness reported having seen the suspect leaving the apartment during the time that the burglary had occurred. Officers Luke Slavens and Larry Lunsford had been able to recover the stolen property at an apartment where the suspect was staying. Officer Lunsford obtained a warrant for the suspect’s arrest at that time and he had remained at-large until his arrest at the convenience store.

Sexual Assault of a Child Arrest

A 31 year-old Lewisville man is in custody for the sexual assault of a child. A 15 year-old female reported that her mother’s ex-boyfriend assaulted her while her mother and he were dating. The abuse began when she was approximately eight and continued until she was ten. Detective Javier Carcano obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect. Detectives arrested the suspect at his place of employment in Irving. The suspect is being held in the Denton County Jail on a $50,000 bond and an ICE detainer.

SWAT Training at the Vista Ridge Mall

On August 20th, the Lewisville Police Department conducted SWAT training at the Vista Ridge Mall in the old Movies 12 location. Being able to conduct this sort of training at “real world” locations really helps to ensure that SWAT can effectively respond to actual events. Sgt. Blair is hoping to conduct additional training at the Mall in the future, most likely a mass casualty drill which would involve multiple agencies.

Staying safe at the lake

Lewisville Lake is one of the defining features of the greater Lewisville area. It is a valued recreation destination for residents and visitors alike.
But Lewisville Lake, along with all other bodies of water across the state, can be dangerous when lake patrons do not exercise caution. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 444 people died on Texas lakes from 1999-2004, with 110 lakes experiencing at least one fatality. At Lewisville Lake, 17 people have died since 2004, the third most in the state behind Lake Travis and Lake Conroe.

Across the state, males between the ages of 15-24 made up the largest demographic of fatalities, accounting for 28 percent of deaths. Most (87 percent) of the fatalities were a result of drowning. Drowning usually occurs quickly and silently.

Here are some swimming safety tips to help ensure safety in the water:
• Always swim with someone else, never alone
• Know your swimming limits and stay within them
• Keep an eye on weaker swimmers
• Alcohol and swimming do not mix
• Swim in supervised areas only
• Do not chew gum or eat while swimming
• Obey “No Diving” signs
• Always enter the water feet first
• Do not swim in unfamiliar parts of the lake
• Watch for the dangerous “too’s”: too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity

Thirty-two percent of lake deaths involve watercraft. Operators of vessels need to make sure their boat is in top operating condition and has necessary safety equipment. Boating and alcohol do not mix, and operating a watercraft while intoxicated is illegal. All personal floatation devices must be U.S. Coast Guard approved, in serviceable condition, readily accessible and of the appropriate size for the intended user.

Safety equipment that should be on any vessel includes:
• Personal floatation device (children under 13 in motorboats under 26 feet are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD while the vessel is underway)
• Type IV throwable PFD (required for vessels 16 feet and longer)
• Fire extinguisher
• On-board whistle or horn and a bell (required for vessels 39.4 feet or longer)
• Bright light, lantern or flashlight

School will be back in session on Monday, August 24th. Be sure to watch for children and obey school zone speed limits.

LEWISVILLE SCHOOL ZONE FACTS

· There are 16 school zones composed of 61 roadways.
· The police department employs 33 crossing guards.
· Thirty-one of the 33 crossing guards will be returning from last year.
· Nine crossing guards have over five years experience.
· The police department will average eight officers on special assignment in the school zones the first two weeks of school. Traffic Officers and Neighborhood Resource Officers will be pulled from their regular assignments to work school zones mornings and afternoons.
· Except for the school zone for Killian Middle school, which is 35 MPH along FM 544, the speed limit during school zones within Lewisville is 20 MPH.
· Each elementary school is assigned a patrol officer to act as a liaison between the school and the police department. The officers visit the school regularly and usually have stickers, pencils or other goodies to hand out the children. Lt. Casey Carter oversees the elementary school liaison officers.

The maximum fine for speeding in a school zone plus court cost is $326.00. The cost increases to $526 if the school zone is also a work zone.

On-Line Water Payments to be Unavailable this Weekend

The City of Lewisville is updating the software used for accepting on-line water bill payments. While this update is in progress, the on-line payment system will be unavailable. The system is expected to go off line at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, and return to normal operations at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10. The updated system will operate more smoothly and be easier for customers to use. We apologize for the brief inconvenience required to complete this update.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

The Lewisville Police Department is investigating the death of Germaine Lance Dawson (21) as a homicide after receiving that determination from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office.

Detectives are interviewing friends and associates of Dawson in an attempt to piece together the events that led up to his murder.

Dawson was discovered at approximately 8:30 AM, March 27, inside a vehicle in a parking lot in the 2400 block of South Interstate 35-E, along the northbound frontage road.

The Lewisville Police Department is investigating the homicide of Marjorie Dabney. In November 2007, skeletal remains were located on U.S. Corp of Engineering property south of the Lake Lewisville dam. The property is located north of the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and State Highway 121 (Business) in Lewisville. On December 5, 2001, Dabney was reported missing from D/FW International Airport. Dabney was switching planes at DFW when she went missing. Police believe Dabney was murdered in late 2001 or early 2002.

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY

The Lewisville Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance to identify the suspect in an aggravated robbery that occurred at approximately 12:30 PM, January 26, at a local check-cashing business. The police department hopes someone will recognize the suspect’s mannerisms or clothing.

The suspect jumped on top of the counter, displayed a small caliber semi-automatic handgun, and ordered the tellers to give him the money from their cash drawers.

The suspect is believed to be a black male with a light-complexion, approximately 5’05” tall, with a thin build. He was wearing a light blue hooded jacket with stripes, baggy pants and had a bandana covering his face.

This suspect is also believed to be responsible for similar robberies in Coppell, Carrollton and Irving.

Report of Gunshots Leads to Burglary Arrest

On Monday, July 27th, at 1130 a.m., Officer Bryan Shelton was dispatched to a “shots fired” call in the 400 block of Hoover Drive. A witness saw a subject park a maroon Mazda 626 and walk into the woods. The witness then heard a gunshot coming from the woods. The suspect then returned to his car and left toward Bellaire Boulevard.

Officer Shelton located the suspect vehicle at Corporate Drive and Southwest Parkway, approximately half a mile from the call location. Officer Shelton, with assistance from Officers Luke Slavens and George Reed, stopped the vehicle. Inside of the car, officers located a pillowcase containing two handguns, collector coins, and jewelry. Knowing that burglars routinely use pillowcases to carry stolen items, the officers suspected that this subject may be guilty of more than just firing a gun. The suspect was arrested for Unlawful Carrying Weapon. Later in the day, Officer Carla Michel linked the recovered items to a burglary on Live Oak (in close proximity to the original “shots fired” call). After further investigation, Detective David Henley obtained a warrant for the suspect for Burglary of a Habitation. A second suspect was implicated, but not located at the time.

Citizens Police Academy accepting applications

The Lewisville Citizens Police Academy, the closest civilians can come to the men and women in blue, short of pursuing a badge of their own, is accepting applications for its 2009 class that starts on Sept. 10.

The free 13-week program includes instruction and training experiences from the classroom to the firing range. Since 1989, dozens of Lewisville residents have gained a better understanding of local law enforcement efforts through the program.

“As both an instructor and program coordinator, I’m always pleased to see the students’ excitement and enthusiasm each and every week,” said Lewisville Police Training Coordinator Scott Pedigo. “At the conclusion of each class, I’m always overwhelmed by the appreciation of the students. It seems that most don’t want their involvement in the program to end.”

Classes are held on Thursday evenings, and there are Saturday sessions on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. Graduation will be Dec. 10. After completing the class, many graduates join the CPA Alumni Association and volunteer with the department in a variety of capacities. Alumni also are eligible to ride with patrol officers as observers.

Participants must be at least 18 years old before classes begin and either live or work in Lewisville. Class space is limited, so those interested in participating should apply as soon as possible. Help us help you! You can help reduce car burglaries by following these simple rules:

Lock your car. An unlocked vehicle is an open invitation to a car thief. Be sure to lock all points of entry into your vehicle and shut tight any windows including the vent or wind-wing windows.

Place your packages out of sight. Out of sight, out of mind. Thieves don’t want to waste time breaking into your car if they aren’t guaranteed a bargain!

Park in well-lighted areas at night.

Remove valuable possessions from the car. Items like cell phones, PDAs, IPOD's, jewelry, garage door openers, cameras, laptops and the bags you carry them in are just as enticing to a thief.

Use a secondary anti-theft device if you own one.

Removal of Debris Generated from June 10th Storms

The City of Lewisville will be assisting residents with removal of debris created by June 10’s thunderstorms.
Trees, limbs and debris can be moved to the front curb or delivered to one of eight dumpster locations around the city. City crews cannot enter private property to remove limbs or debris. Structural debris and other trash items are not to be included.
Due to the scope of the storm, curbside debris will be removed within a week to two weeks.
Items too large to be picked up and placed in the dumpsters at the eight locations can be placed near the dumpster. Dumpsters should be in place by 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11.
The locations include:
1. Lewisville High School Parking Lot – Main Street
2. Garden Ridge Elementary – Garden Ridge and Cascade
3. Huffines Middle School – Valley Parkway
4. Delay Middle School – Purnell and Charles

Free concerts, movies return to Old Town in June

Five top regional acts have been scheduled for the “Sounds of Lewisville” Summer Concert Series, presented for the 19th consecutive year by the City of Lewisville and blended this year with the Reel Lewisville movie series.

The free concerts will be held on Tuesday nights, from June 3 through June 30, starting at 7 p.m. the final two dates are Reel Lewisville movie nights, with a free movie starting at 9:30 p.m. after the concert. Concerts and movies are presented in Old Town Lewisville, adjacent to Lewisville City Hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

In addition to the concerts and movies, local animal rescue and welfare groups will be on hand each week to accept donations of pet-related supplies such as pet food and treats, shampoo, litter, cleaning supplies, gently used toys or blankets, and unused animal medication. This outreach effort is an extension of the highly popular Tailwaggers Ranch featured at many Lewisville street festivals. Groups at the events will be Texas Italian Greyhound Rescue (June 2), Great Dane Rescue of North Texas (June 9), DFW Collie Rescue (June 16), Hickory Creek Animal Services (June 23) and Highland Village Animal Care Unit (June 30).

“Sounds of Lewisville” and Reel Lewisville are coordinated by the City of Lewisville Community Relations & Tourism Department with assistance from the Parks and Leisure Services Department.

Neighbor Helps Nab Burglars

On May 30th, at approximately 7:46 p.m., Officers Stamper, Chi, and Nichols were dispatched to a burglary of a residence in the 100 block of Pine Street. A witness saw four suspects break into a neighbor’s home. Upon Officer Stamper’s arrival, he located the suspects leaving the neighborhood in a Chevrolet Blazer. Officer Stamper was able to take two of the suspects into custody immediately following a brief vehicle pursuit. The other two suspects ran on foot from Officer Stamper. Officers Dority and Tiberghien located a third suspect in the area. The fourth suspect eventually returned to Officer Stamper and was taken into custody. In the suspect vehicle, officers recovered a big screen television and numerous other items that had been stolen from the home on Pine Street. Two of the suspects were female juveniles and the other two were adult males, a 20 year-old Carrollton man and an 18 year-old Dallas man. The juveniles were detained for burglary of a habitation and both adult males were arrested for burglary of a habitation and for evading arrest (09-06249).

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours

day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of
coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in
front of
him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and
empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked
the
students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the
jar He
shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between
the golf
balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed
it
was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of
course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the
jar was
full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and
poured
the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between
the sand. The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to
recognize
that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important
things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your
favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they
remained,
your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house
and
your car.

The sand is everything else---the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into
the
jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf
balls.
The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the
small
stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend
time
with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with
grandparents.
Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play
another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the
disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set
your
priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented.
The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'

The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's
always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

The votes have it we will be having our Neighborhood Picnic on May 31st. I had to change the name from Neighborhood Party to Neighborhood Picnic only because I haven't had the time to go out and get donations for a party this year, but we can still get together and have a little fun!!!

On Saturday, May 23, Sun Valley Aquatic Center will be open from 1:00pm - 6:00pm to kick off the summer by offering free admission. Sun Valley will be open on a weekends only schedule until both facilities open up for the summer season at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5.
Want to bring your friends to one of our aquatic parks to party with us? Contact the Parks and Leisure Services office to reserve your space beginning in May. Once the pools open, contact them directly for the current schedule.
There is a slight change to the admission policy for the aquatic parks. A guest must be at least 9 years of age in order to come to the pool without a parent or guardian. The age of a person considered to be a parent or guardian has been reduced to include those that are at least 16 years of age or older. KLB re-schedules 23rd annual Spring Cleanup

Volunteers are needed for the 23rd annual Keep Lewisville Beautiful citywide cleanup to be held Saturday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to noon. This event had been scheduled for May 9 but was postponed when Lewisville ISD schools closed in response to the HiN1 virus (swine flu). The local event is being held in conjunction with the Keep Texas Beautiful Trash Off and the Keep American Beautiful Great America Clean Up. Volunteers are needed for clean up teams and on-site help.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Lewisville High School, 1098 W. Main Street. Cleanup teams will then go to their assigned locations around the city to collect litter and other trash, returning at noon for lunch and door prizes. Trash bags, gloves and grabbers will be provided.

Last year’s cleanup collected 4.6 tons of trash from medians, roadways and greenbelts. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to sign up as individuals or groups to help make this year’s effort even more successful. Those wanting to participate but unavailable on May 9 are invited to organize their own cleanup or Adopt-A-Spot through KLB.

Local businesses also are encouraged to show your support for a cleaner community by having employees clean the grounds outside the business, closing dumpster lids, and having plenty of trash receptacles for customers to use.

Have you met your neighbors? It still amazes me after years how many of us have not met our neighbors, yet have lived in this neighborhood for years. Take a few minutes of your time and introduce yourself to your neighbors or to new neighbors. It is good to know who your neighbors are and you may just find out that you have more in common than not. If they have not already, have them sign up their email address to our blog to recieve important neighborhood information.

Are you interested in having a Block Party for your street? Summer is the perfect time to get together as neighbors and barbeque. Have a couple people grill and everyone bring their own sides and dessert. Let the children play together.

LISD Reopens Thursday, May 7

Due to today's recommendation from the Center for Disease Control and the Denton County Health Department, Lewisville ISD will reopen on Thursday, May 7. Extended School Day and the 21st Century Learning Grant programs will be open on Thursday.

Tomorrow, our district's facilities department will complete the cleaning process at all of our schools. Teachers may return to their campuses to prepare for Thursday's reopening no earlier than 1 p.m

Crime Watch Signs

The Lewisville Police Department are now going to supply proven active Neighborhood Crime Watches with Block Captains and proven participants with NCW signs.
This is a HUGE expense!!! I spent nearly $300 for 10 signs for our neighborhood.
If we can get a Block Captain for each street and 1 out of 4 homes involved with the Neighborhood Crime Watch we can get this neighborhood covered with NCW signs.

The Lewisville Police Department also are having small signs
(like those security signs for your yard) printed up and will be giving those signs for active participant in the crime watch, but this is NOT set in stone yet.

The City of Lewisville is really getting commited to trying to keeping the crime OUT of Lewisville. We have already doubled the crime watches in Lewisville and are starting new crime watch every week!

One person can make a difference!!!

Police have arrested two Flower Mound suspects believed to be responsible for a recent rash of burglaries in which power lines were cut to disable home security systems.
Kelly Zedekiah Couch, 19, and Gabriel James Thomas, 17, were taken into custody by Flower Mound police early Friday morning after a traffic stop. They were being held in the Flower Mound jail late Friday.

hey...I am at work listening to KRLD.....they said that Lewisville police have reported about a dozen break ins in the neighborhoods around 121 and Bellaire. They said they the burglars are knocking on the door and if nobody is home they are cutting the power to the house and going to the back and breaking a door or window to get in..

Crime Alert

On 4-15-09 at about 8:30 a.m. a black male subject went to a home on the 400 block of Preston Oaks Drive.
The male rang the door bell multiple times. The resident did not answer the door.
The male went to the back of the house and removed the screen and raised an unlocked window.
The resident confronted the male as he was coming into the home through the window.
The male exited the home and left running east bound in the alley. No property was taken.

Prior to the above incidents officers were told that suspects in a different residential burglary was driving
A black, older beat up, car.

On 04-15-09 just after the above incident officers were in the area looking for the suspect.
In a neighboring subdivision an officer saw a tall muscular black male knocking on a door.
The officer guessing the male saw him. The male got into an older black Lexus and drive off
A second officer observed the officer and began to follow. The male made a quick left turn into
The town home parking lot, trying to lose the officer, not realizing it was a dead in.

The black male was arrested for unrelated charges. Detectives will be following up on possible connections to offenses in the area.

Burglars have also shattered patio doors. Kicked in back doors. And cut phone lines. Sometimes cutting the phone line will
Activate the alarm system.

Also, a group of 4 Hispanic males 20 - 30 years of age, one with long hair were observed breaking
Into a residence and fleeing the scene in an older dark colored four door vehicle, possibly a ford unknown model.

It appears that there are multiple burglars operating in so many different ways.

Remind neighbors to secure items and mark property with "TXDL_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ “Their driver license number.
If an officer detains a possible suspect they can check items located in the car, in their pockets, or in their home with this number.
The property owner has better chance of having their property returned. And that gives officers probable cause to arrest.

There have been vehicles targeted for Tires and Specialty Rims. Thieves may be using a large pickup truck or Cargo / Mini Vans to transport stolen wheels from the area. Report any vehicle tags or vehicle descriptions that may be involved in these offenses that are observed acting suspicious or carrying tires through the city during hours of darkness.

REPORT ALL SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY and PEOPLE to the police department at 972-219-3640.

Crime Alert: Solicitors Without a Permit

Why it is important to always ask a solicitor for a Soliciting Permit:

Grand Prairie police are looking for a man who conned his way into an elderly woman’s home. They said he sexually assaulted her and set her on fire.

According to police, the incident happened Monday at about 2 p.m. in the 1800 block of Sunnyvale Road.

The man allegedly knocked on the woman’s door and introduced himself as Daniel, a 22-year-old college student from Chicago. He said he was staying at an area motel and he was trying to talk to people to earn points for a communications exercise, police said.

But, police said after the woman let him into her home he assaulted her and poured rubbing alcohol on her chest. He set her on fire, they said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital with second degree burns from her stomach to chin.

She told police her attacker was a black male who was between 20 and 25 years old. He weighed about 160 to 190 pounds and stood between 6 and 6 feet 4 inches tall. He wore a white shirt and multicolored paints. His hair was styled in short, tight corn rows.

Police hope someone will recognize him from the description and call Detective Tracy Hinson at 972-237-877 or Crime Stoppers at 972-988-8477.

As an animal and/or pet owner within the City of Lewisville, it is YOUR responsibility to educate yourself on City Codes that affect you. The City has adopted a new animal ordinance which took effect February 16th, 2009. Briefly:

· It will be illegal to leave a dog outdoors and unattended by use of a restraint that unreasonably limits the dog’s movement. Dogs restrained and left unattended outdoors must be kept in a yard that is enclosed by a fence or enclosed structure that prevents unauthorized access by another person or stray dogs and other animals.

· No live animal can be sold or given away on public property or any property to which the public has access that is not certified to sell animals. The only exceptions are city animal service employees and non-profit animal welfare or adoption agencies.

· Animals can no longer be given away as a prize, a promotional tool or an inducement to participate in a fund-raising event. This includes raffles and similar giveaways.

· It will be illegal to carry or transport an animal in the open bed of any moving pickup, flatbed or similar vehicle operating on any public roadway in the city limits unless the animal is safely restrained in a carrier or similar device.

While city officials plan to use the first few weeks to educate the public on the new rules and seek voluntary compliance, it is important to note that any violation of the ordinance is a misdemeanor offense with a fine of up to $500.

If you own an animal, make sure it is properly restrained at all times. If you cannot keep your animal restrained or come within compliance with City Code, please consider having it adopted.

If you observe a stray or loose animal, you may call the City of Lewisville Animal Control at 972-219-3478. They respond to calls M-F from 8 AM to 8 PM and on Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. Keeping Lewisville Beautiful told us something that I thought was pretty interesting at our last NCW meeting.
Coralee Lennert said that our City Landfill will be at capacity in 3-5 years then our garbage bill could double!

Items that can be recycled in our containers that the city provides

Mixed Residential Paper: Newspapers, inserts, magazines, paper boxes, mail, junk mail, office paper, phone books, and flattened cardboard.

Cans: Food, beverage and soft drink cans composed of tin, steel or aluminum; other clean cans of same material.

Glass: Unbroken food and beverage containers that are clear, brown or green in color.
