Lock up everywere you go...

When thinking of crime prevention (or specifically how to keep your things safely yours) always remember the three elements that must be present in order for a crime to happen: desire, ability, and opportunity. If just one of those three elements is removed, the crime simply cannot occur. In regards to the gym situation, the easiest element to remove from the equation is opportunity. If you lock up your things in your locker instead of just throwing them in there and shutting the door, hoping they will still be there when you get back, you completely remove the opportunity for the crime to happen. Removing the opportunity for a crime is one of the easiest things you can do. Why just leave it to chance? Remove the opportunity—lock them up.

This applies to anywhere you may leave your things unattended (car, amusement park, office, etc). It may seem like common sense, but sometimes even the most cautious of us forget. Walking through my gym locker room, I noticed only a handful of lockers actually had locks on them. While some were empty, a number of brave souls left their purses, laptop bags, and other personal belongings in an unlocked locker. Sometimes in order for us to remember to practice daily crime prevention, a crime has to happen to remind us that crime prevention is everybody’s business. Lock up your things—wherever you are.
